PARADISE BARN by VICTOR WATSON
It’s September 1940 in the English village of Great Deeping. Despite the shadow of war and ongoing aerial battles overhead, life seems straightforward. Then a violent murder shatters the veneer of calm. Best friends Molly and Abigail along with Adam, a recent evacuee from London, become embroiled in solving the mystery. This coming-of-age story, combining rich historical detail with suspense and adventure, effectively depicts how suspicion and prejudice can challenge the bonds of friendship and community during a time of conflict.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Librarians face many conundrums in any working day; weening Mr Bloggs off War History Novels, Mrs Bloggs away from Murder Mystery Novels and convincing their adorable children not to take all of the books off the shelve to build a Book House in the Corner, not to mention finding leaves for the Reading Tree. My latest dilemma? How to assist a woman on crutches with her Library Books as there were no bags to be found. Which is why I’m very grateful to Mrs Stacia Hooley for arriving in this afternoon with a bag of guess what? Bags! Thanks. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

LINCOLN AND HIS BOYS by ROSEMARY WELLS
In the bicentennial year of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, this is a family portrait from the perspective of two of his sons covering a period before and after his election as US president. It is well researched and captures the social history of the period and life in the White House with child’s eye detail. PJ Lynch’s meticulous, realistic images reveal the close, warm relationship Lincoln had with his boys. Any child with an interest in history, America, and particularly its presidents will be fascinated.
