Nenagh - Creative Writing with author Vincent McDonnell

May 14th, 2010 · No Comments

On Thursday, 13th May, award winning author, Vincent McDonnell, gave a most interesting creative writing class to members of our local book club and lifelong learning groups. Other members of the public who were interested in writing also came to this session, determined not to miss an opportunity to gain insights into the creative writing process from a professional, published writer.  Vincent took a very broad subject, creative writing, and managed to focus it so that all members of the group gained something from this two hour practical workshop. He immediately put people at their ease and allowed them time and space to discuss their own work as well as telling them of his experiences as a writer. Those who attended this workshop really enjoyed it and felt that the two hours flew by.

‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’ - Book Review Nenagh Book Club

THE ELEGANCE OF THE HEDGEHOG

Review by Austin Kenny

This novel has been a publishing sensation in France selling over two and half million copies worldwide and making a literary superstar of its author, Muriel Barbery. It is a curious and engaging story told from the perspective of two different narrators with the switches from one to the other marked by a change in typeface.

The first narrator is Renée Michel. She has spent half of her fifty four years working as the concierge of No. 7 Rue de Grenelle, a fine Hotel Particular in Paris, which has a courtyard and private gardens and is divided into eight luxury apartments. These are the homes of bankers, lawyers and politicians along with their pampered pets and offspring. Archetypal members of the bourgeoisie, they are selfish and arrogant. Some with phony concerns for the plight of the ‘lower’ classes belong to ‘The Caviar Left’. We know them as ‘Smoked Salmon Socialists’. They lead fatuous empty lives and are incapable of engaging meaningfully with life, be it human, plant or animal. When Rennée’s husband dies having been for many (more…)

Nenagh - Book Review ‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’

May 6th, 2010 · No Comments

The Elegance of the Hedgehog‘The ‘Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barbary

Reviews were decidedly mixed for this book in our Nenagh library book club but certainly this reviewer would encourage the reader to persevere with it.

‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barabary suggests a satirical look at French soiety through the eyes and words of 54 year old Renée Michel, a concierge working in a  upscale Parisian apartment building, and Paloma, a 12 year old student. Renée is judged to be an uneducated, dull caretaker by the residents of the building but in fact she is a deeply intellectual and philosophical woman, well read and cultured. She  lives with a tragic secret from her youth which she finally reveals to Paloma, thereby changing Paloma’s disillusioned view of the society and family in which she lives. (more…)

Borrisokane Adult Book Club Review

McCarthy’s Bar by Pete McCarthy

Pete McCarthy was born in England to an English father and an Irish mother. His childhood summers were spent in Cork with his mother’s family and this gave him a sense of belonging in Ireland. In “McCarthy’s Bar” he recounts his travels from Cork Donegal via Lough Derg. He has many travelling “rules” the most often mentioned one being never to pass a pub with his name over the door. Pete sets off on his journey in a rickety old car and discovers a sense of belonging in a country that he’s adopted as his own.

“McCarthy’s Bar” is a funny and light-hearted book. It is an easy read with many “laugh-out-loud” moments. It is also a reflective and sometimes nostalgic book as he recalls the Ireland he experienced on his holidays as a child and compares it with the bungalow besieged Ireland of the 1990’s. This book is very funny and very easy to read.

Labryrinth by Kate Mosse is a grail quest tale which starts out in present day with Alice on an archaeolgical dig on the side of a mountain in Carcassonne in France where she discovers a cave filled with secrets. The story then turns to 13th centruy France where we’re introduced to Alais who is living through the Fourth Crusade which was launched against the Cathars who were charged with heresy. The Cathars are used in this novel to represent a kindly, antiracist, tolerant force and it not unitl three quarters of the way through the book that we are told that their heresy is based around the belief that the world was created by the devil and we are in fact living in hell. This is one of the only annnoying things about the book as the heresy is referred to throughout the text and the explaination comes quite late in the story. (more…)

Roscrea: Christmas Short Story Winner

December 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Congratulations to Jonas Stankevicius (Aged 9) for winning our Christmas Short Story Competition.

WOW! Its Christmas Eve right now. I’m going to the Library now as quick as I can. Near the Library there was Carol singers singinig “Lets Celebrate this xmas”. There was a big Santa Claus poster say: “Circus of Xmas” Near the Library was a big snow machine and they hitted me in the head and in the leg. My pants went down and all the people saw my underpants. This evening I got the book called ‘Matilda’. My parents setted up the Christmas Tree with the decorations, with lights and an angel on top of the Christmas Tree. We had a very nice Xmas Eve and we eated some sweet rice pudding and the turkey and also all the twelve recipies. The stars were shining bright in Roscrea and the moon was so big and it was full. It was midnight already and Santa Claus was already there eating the cookies and drinking the milk. It was fantasitc and Santa Claus was a little bit scared when I came into the Kitchen. He said my two presents are here now. He gave me a magic bell to see what is my wish. I rang it. That was my wish and it all came true. Santa Claus flew away and I was so excited! “
