KidsREAD: Paradise Barn

Recommended by Childrens Books Ireland ( 9-12yrs)

PARADISE BARN by VICTOR WATSON

It’s September 1940 in the English village of Great Deeping. Despite the shadow of war and ongoing aerial battles overhead, life seems straightforward. Then a violent murder shatters the veneer of calm. Best friends Molly and Abigail along with Adam, a recent evacuee from London, become embroiled in solving the mystery. This coming-of-age story, combining rich historical detail with suspense and adventure, effectively depicts how suspicion and prejudice can challenge the bonds of friendship and community during a time of conflict.

LINCOLN AND HIS BOYS by ROSEMARY WELLS

In the bicentennial year of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, this is a family portrait from the perspective of two of his sons covering a period before and after his election as US president. It is well researched and captures the social history of the period and life in the White House with child’s eye detail. PJ Lynch’s meticulous, realistic images reveal the close, warm relationship Lincoln had with his boys. Any child with an interest in history, America, and particularly its presidents will be fascinated.

KidsREAD: Flood and Fang

THE RAVEN MYSTERIES, BOOK ONE: FLOOD AND FANG by MARCUS SEDGWICK

Part Addams Family, part Sherlock Holmes, this new series of hair-raisingmystery stories will have young sleuths hooked from the outset. In this first instalment, Sedgwick introduces us to the ghoulish Otherhand family and the eccentric goings-on of their castle home. Narrated in the first person by Edgar –pet Raven detective extraordinaire – the tone is appealingly light and accessible, Williamson’s creepy illustrations adding just the right measure of expression and humour. Highly recommended.
