Cashel: Multicultural workshops

August 19th, 2010 · No Comments

This year’s multicultural workshops were a huge success, with 30 children attending to learn about Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Egypt and Romania. Every morning we learned some interesting facts about the chosen country, did some crafts, and played traditional games. We even attempted the Mexican Hat Dance and the Romanian Hora Dance. At the end of each workshop, there was some traditional food to be tasted. Each child also received a “multicultures @ your library” T-shirt, courtesy of Europe Direct.

Music against poverty contest: young Europeans speak out on fighting worldwide poverty!

Today, the European Commission launches the European Music Contest calling young Europeans, between 15 and 25, to submit a song expressing support to the fight against poverty in the world. Each participant will create an original song on the general issue of development, and notably on the eight Millennium Development Goals. The winners - selected through online voting and a jury of music professionals – will get a professional studio recording of their song and will have the opportunity to perform during the European Development Days in December 2010 in Brussels. The music contest is part of the “I fight poverty campaign”, dedicated to raise awareness among teenagers on the EU’s action in the field of development cooperation. (more…)

Altogether, 17 primary schools entered the competition, with our judges given the difficult task of choosing winners from almost 600 entries.

The entries can now be seen on display in Thurles Library, so do pop in to see what the next generation thinks of climate change.
