Roscrea: Teen Reads Review

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
“I thought this was an excellent book and was well written. It is set in the 1960’s in America and has a funny, charming side as well as slightly serious. The characters were very good and the incidents they faced. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to most readers.”

Football Academy: The Real Thing by Tom Palmer
“This was brilliant. It’s about a team called United and they go off to Poland on a soccer trip. They lose the final but are still very happy”

A Note of Madness by Tabitha Suzuma
Life as a student is good for Flynn. As one of the top pianists at the Royal College of Music, he is put forward for a big concert, the opportunity of a lifetime. But beneath the surface, things are changing. On a good day he feels full of energy and life, but on a bad day being alive is worse than being dead. Sometimes he wants to compose and practise all night, at other times he can’t even get out of bed. His flatmate Harry tries to understand but is increasingly confused by Flynn’s erratic mood swings. His friend Jennah tries to help, but Flynn finds it difficult to be around her - she evokes in him feelings that he can’t accept. With the pressure of the forthcoming concert and the growing concern of his family and friends, emotions come to a head. Sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better.

One of the most beautiful novellas to read at one sitting.
June 23rd, 2010 · No Comments
Lydia Cassatt Reading the Morning Paper by Harriet Scott Chessman is one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. Stories of immortality told tenderly and beautifully written.
Each chapter centers on a painting (and has a colour illustration of the painting) by the American born impressionist painter Mary Cassatt. The stories are told through the eyes of her sister Lydia as she poses for the artist and she reflects on her life, her lost loves and her family as they come to terms with her terminal illness.
Available through any library in Co Tipperary and a must read.

Cool Read: Payback

PAYBACK by ROSEMARY HAYES
Taking us from Pakistan to London this is a prevalent story about Halima, a young Muslim girl, whose life is turned upside down when she discovers she has been promised in marriage to someone she has never met for the repayment of an old debt. As frank as it is compelling, Payback is written with an honesty that is wonderfully familiar and genuine. This book will ignite in any young reader the passion and right to choose their own destiny and to follow their heart.
